About DMC
The Department of Media and Communication (DMC) at the Royal University of Phnom Penh is Cambodia’s first and leading higher education institution dedicated to journalism, communication, and related fields.
Overview & Academic Program
Established in 2001, the Department has over two decades of experience preparing graduates to meet the needs of the country’s media and communication sector. Through its programs and the achievements of its alumni, DMC has contributed to the development of professional standards and practical skills in journalism and communication in Cambodia.
The Department offers a four-year Bachelor of Arts in Media Management, which combines academic study with practical training. Students progress from foundational courses to advanced studies, gaining both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in journalism, communication, and media management. The program prepares graduates to meet professional requirements in media and communication locally and internationally.
Facilities & Support
To support learning, DMC provides facilities such as a computer laboratory, radio and television studios, meeting rooms, and professional audiovisual equipment. The Department’s library offers books, research reports, media productions, and periodicals to support both academic study and applied research.
Faculty members include Cambodian and international academics and media and communication professionals who bring both expertise and practical experience to teaching. The Advisory Council at DMC provides strategic guidance to ensure the Department’s programs remain relevant, innovative, and aligned with the evolving needs of Cambodia’s media landscape. The Council brings together distinguished representatives from government, academia, media, and international organizations to support DMC’s mission of cultivating skilled, ethical, and socially responsible media professionals.
Student Experience & Careers
Internships, exchange programs, study visits, and guest lectures provide students with opportunities to gain practical experience and engage with the wider media and communication community.
Graduates of DMC pursue careers in journalism, video production industry, communications, public relations, research, content creations, marketing, and academia, reflecting the Department’s commitment to preparing skilled and ethical professionals.
Collaborative Projects
Recently, DMC has engaged in a number of collaborative projects with national and international partners. Examples include the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education project, “Sustainable Development Goals in Journalism Reporting (SDGsJR),” supported by European partners, through which DMC implemented the SDGs Journalism Reporting course for Year 4 students.
Another example is DMC’s collaboration with UNESCO Cambodia, which produced the Gender-Sensitive Safety Guidelines for Cambodian media and the Digital, Media, and Information Literacy (DMIL) Toolkit for climate reporting. These initiatives bring together media professionals, journalists, academics, and students to promote ethical practices, evidence-based reporting, and media and information literacy.
In 2024, DMC and UNESCO also organized workshops in Siem Reap and Ratanakiri Province under the theme “Digital, Media, and Information Literacy” to raise awareness during Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week for youths and indigenous communities.
Research Culture
Besides these projects, the DMC also promotes research culture in Cambodian higher education institutions by publishing the Cambodian Communication Review. The Review series aims to provide scholars, experts and practitioners with a platform to express their thoughts and ideas, especially on issues related to media and communication as well as to promote university as a public space, whereby ideas, thoughts, and thinking are openly expressed, contested, and debated.
“Through its programs, practical training, and collaborative projects, the Department of Media and Communication continues to provide students with education and experience in journalism and communication. With a focus on professional competence, ethical standards, and international collaboration, DMC ensures that both the Department and its graduates continue to make their marks.”
