The DMC is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Royal University of Phnom Penh. We offer a four-year Bachelor of Arts in Media Management.

Course Offered


In this course students build up their English language proficiency in all four macro-skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will be able to use English at an intermediate level for various communicative purposes.

This course focuses on the improvement of students’ macro skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking and knowledge of grammar, including the tense system, use of reported speech and question forms.

This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts, theories, and methods of sociology. It explores how human behavior is shaped by social structures, cultural norms, institutions, and interactions.

This course provides an overview of the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes. It covers major areas such as perception, learning, memory, motivation, emotion, development, personality, and psychological disorders.

This course is designed to equip students with essential digital skills and knowledge for their studies at the DMC. Students will be introduced to a range of digital competencies, including online learning platforms and Internet fundamentals.

This course explores mass media organizations, how they operate and exert their influence on individuals and society enabling students to become knowledgeable and self-critical consumers of mass media content.

This course introduces students to the fundamental questions, concepts, and methods of philosophy. It explores key areas such as ethics, logic, epistemology, and metaphysics.

This course covers Khmer History over a broad period of time, from the Angkorian period, French Protectorate and Khmer Rouge period to present day. Students examine the changing face of Cambodian history over these periods.

With the focus on data interpretation, this course is designed to develop the student’s understanding of summarized data in both descriptive and inferential statistical applications.

This course introduces to key journalistic concepts, forms, texts and systems and explores the importance of the media in a democratic society. Students will develop an understanding of journalist´s role.

This course enables students to write accurate and compelling English. Students are introduced to different types of sentence structures and paragraphs, including grammatical and stylistic principles.

This course aims to cover different journalistic genres and writing styles. This includes news writing and commentaries as well as features. A main focus are “rounds”, which means special areas of reporting.

This course takes a practical oriented approach to build up student´s skills in the basics of news writing and reporting. The main objective is to develop a clear, concise writing style.

This course provides students with professional photography skills, how to see the world like a photographer and how to capture compelling and meaningful images using proper light, exposure and composition.

Through this course, students gain an understanding of political concepts and issues, including the nature of government and society, different political systems, forms of government, and theories of government.

From this course students gain an understanding of basic concepts in graphic design, including the ability to use graphics, sketches and graphs. They learn about color, typography and corporate design.

This course equips students with the skills to critically evaluate, manage, and create information in digital environments. It explores the credibility of online sources and ethical use of information.

This course addresses journalistic issues in the field of radio broadcasting including the related multimedia platforms. The course prepares students to report, write and present journalistic formats tailored for radio.

This course introduces students to the principles and practices of audio content creation, with a focus on podcasting as a growing medium in journalism and media. Students will learn techniques for recording and editing.

This course aims to convey the sophisticated “art” of in-depth reporting and investigative journalism. The focus is on building up a hypothesis and to guide students through the process of verification.

This course covers key elements of the research process within quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches. It aims to bring together the theoretical and practical elements of research.

This course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge about video- and TV-journalism. It exposes students to a practical experience as video journalists, understanding key concepts in producing video documentaries.

Students will learn to think strategically, present creative ideas and gain a comprehensive perspective on corporate communications and PR. The course emphasizes strategic planning to address critical business objectives.

This course aims to provide students with an introduction to the basic of communication and media research. Students will learn about different research methods used in analyzing media and its impacts on society.

This course aims to develop students’ proficiency in academic English to a high standard, focusing on the skills necessary for research, critical analysis, and scholarly writing.

The course introduces to the production process and conditions at TV stations and video production companies. The students will learn managerial skills in different types of production, filming and directing.

The purpose of this course is to equip students with essential tools to produce the Bachelor thesis. This includes formal criteria, choosing a topic as well as structuring the academic research and time management.

This course is designed to develop the students’ knowledge on specific principles and practices of multimedia journalism. The teaching includes comprehensive training on how to research and structure online publications.

A modern newsroom operates with different media platforms which are interconnected. Addressing this complexity needs careful planning and sophisticated management skills. The course offers the students practical exercises in production planning.

This course will give students a firm grounding in the dynamic of entrepreneurial journalism. They will look for key opportunities to succeed as a freelance journalist or even to start an ambitious media business.

Through this course, students will be equipped with skills needed to make sense of new technologies and the ways they contribute to changes in media and communication process as well as multimedia production.

This course explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and the media industry. Students will examine how AI technologies are transforming journalism, content creation, audience engagement, and media distribution.

This course introduces students to the principles and practices of presenting data in clear, engaging, and informative visual formats. Students will learn how to select appropriate chart types and use design principles effectively.

This course involves students with variety of arising issues and topics in media and journalism. They will have chances to examine and discuss challenges as well as controversies the news media are facing locally, regional, and globally.

This course examines the principles of leadership and the dynamics of behavior within organizations. Students will explore leadership theories, motivation, team dynamics, communication, decision-making, and conflict management.

Program Profile (Background Information)

Department of Media and Communication (DMC) at RUPP was established in 2001 as the first academic training centre for communication, journalism, and media in Cambodia.

The contemporary media landscape is in a state of radical transformation, driven by rapid technological development, globalization, and the evolving dynamics of ASEAN integration. This programme is designed to address the urgent need for media professionals who can navigate this complex environment with both technical skill and ethical integrity. Market analysis indicates a strong and growing demand for graduates who possess a blend of traditional media and communication competencies and modern digital, managerial, and entrepreneurial skills.

Program Description

The Bachelor of Arts in Media Management is a comprehensive, competency-based programme designed to prepare a new generation of media leaders for Cambodia. The curriculum holistically integrates timeless journalistic values—such as ethical practice, rigorous fact-gathering, and compelling storytelling—with the challenges and opportunities of the digital age. The programme is founded on the principle of developing both social responsibility and future employability, cultivating graduates who possess not only in-depth knowledge and advanced analytical skills but also the critical management competencies required to lead and innovate in the fields of mass media, communication, and journalism.

Program Duration

It is a full-time programme conducted over a period of four academic years. Each academic year is divided into two semesters.

For the first seven semesters of the programme, students are required to complete five 3-credit courses per semester. Each course comprises of 45 contact hours, delivered in 30 sessions of one-and-a-half hours each.

An exception is made in the final semester (Year 4, Semester 2). Students who have been selected for the capstone track will dedicate their full study load to the completion of their Research Thesis or Creative Media Project, which is equivalent to 15 credits, instead of the standard five courses.

Credit Matter

To be awarded the Bachelor of Arts in Media Management, a student is required to successfully complete a total of 120 academic credits over the four-year duration of the programme. In addition to the academic coursework, students must also successfully complete a mandatory, non-credit internship.

Program Structure (modules/courses)

The B.A. in Media Management is designed as a primarily Industry-Oriented programme, with strong Research-Oriented and Project-Based elements to produce well-rounded graduates. The structure and content encompass a comprehensive construction of curriculum modules that are logically sequenced to support student learning progression and the achievement of the expected program learning outcomes.

The curriculum is structured across three main levels:

  • Foundation Courses (Year 1): This level includes university-level general/common courses (e.g., General Psychology, Foundation to Sociology) and core disciplinary introductions (Foundation to Mass Communication, Principles and Practice of Journalism). These courses build the fundamental knowledge and broad perspectives necessary for advanced study.
  • Intermediate Courses (Year 2 & 3): This level focuses on developing professional competencies. Students engage with a succession of major-specific courses that build skills in print media, broadcast production, and research methodologies. The courses are planned to be integrated; for example, writing skills are developed alongside visual design skills to build a holistic professional competence.
  • Advanced Courses (Year 4): This level focuses on specialization and high-level application. Courses in media management, leadership, and digital convergence prepare students for leadership roles. The curriculum culminates in an advanced specialization pathway, allowing students to choose between a research-oriented thesis or an industry-oriented creative project/exit exam, thereby integrating and demonstrating their cumulative learning.

Degree Requirement / Program Exit Requirements

To be obtain the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Media Management, a student must fulfill all of the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete the 120 program’s required credits from Year 1 to Year 4.
  • Achieve a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.00 on all coursework.
  • Successfully complete the mandatory, non-credit internship and submit a satisfactory report.
  • Fulfill all other administrative and financial obligations to the Royal University of Phnom Penh.

Graduation Requirements

Students must earn a minimum of 120 credit points to be eligible for the award of Bachelor of Arts in Media Management. Students have two pathways after completing all the requirements from Year 1 to Year 4 Semester 1:

  • Pathway A: Successfully complete and defend the final Research Thesis or Creative Media Project (15 credits).
  • Pathway B: Successfully complete the five final semester courses (15 credits) and pass the comprehensive Exit Examination.

Policy for Credit Transfer Students/ Mobility

In line with the sub-degree of the government, students of other universities who wish to enroll in the BA in Media Management Program are required to follow the procedures below.

  • Submit a credit transfer form and their official foundation year transcripts.
  • Take a test designed by the department.
  • Wait for the approval from the University

Students who wish to go on any exchange or long-term training program shall inform and get approval from the Department and the university’s International Relations Office. Credits for exchange programs can be transferred only if there is an MoU between the two institutions, and if the courses to be taken satisfy the number of credits required and are relevant to the courses provided by the home Department. For the institution without an MoU with the home Department, credit transfer is at the university’s discretion, and is in accordance with the rules and regulations of the university. The students shall get the final approval or equivalent from the International Relations Office of RUPP before applying or attending the exchange program. Students will not be granted study leave for a period greater than one academic year.

Promotion

Students must fulfill all academic and attendance requirements for promotion to the next academic year. To pass any course, a student must achieve a minimum score of 50%.

  • a. A student who fails a course in any semester is eligible to sit for a supplementary examination for that semester, provided they have fulfilled the attendance requirements. However, supplementary examinations are not offered for the final semester of the fourth year; students who fail one or more courses in that semester must repeat them.
  • b. If a student fails three or more courses in a single semester after taking supplementary examinations, they must repeat that entire semester. Students may repeat a full academic year only once at each year level.
  • c. Under no circumstances may a student take more than six years to complete the Bachelor’s degree.
  • d. All students are eligible to sit for all semester examinations. However, if a student fails to meet the attendance requirement for any course, their examination score will be invalidated, regardless of performance. The student must then repeat the course automatically and will not be eligible for a supplementary examination. In this case, both the attendance and score records for that course will be marked as ‘F’.
  • e. Foundation Year students will not be promoted to the second year if they fail even one course after taking the supplementary examination.
  • f. For Years 2 and 3, a student who fails fewer than three courses in a semester after supplementary examinations will be promoted to the next academic year. However, they are required to repeat only those specific failed courses.
  • g. Fourth-year students with any outstanding courses from Year 2 to Year 4, Semester 1, are not permitted to sit for the exit examination.
